@The Glass Wizard Hi Robert, I saw those! (I'm a fan of yours on facebook) I had no idea those were thrifted, I particularly liked the gray one with dots. And, I thought your corners were really intriguing. Anyone who hasn't seen them, I highly suggest visiting Robert on facebook (and give his page a like). HIs work is amazing!

@JoleneNelson Hi Jolene; All valid concerns. The hazard with picking up thrift ware is the possibility that it is NOT stainless. Aluminum and pewter both can mimic stainless and melt at lower temperatures than glass, creating the potential for kiln damage.

If I have a dubious metal piece, I like to fire it alone, inside of a large terra cotta saucer as a test. If it melts, the saucer will contain it and the whole thing can be thrown away. If it is stainless, the surface will oxidise and make the surface easier to kiln wash, which is a plus. That way my shelf AND kiln are protected. At worst, I lose a saucer.

The other thing to watch out for is double walled stainless, which has an airspace between the inner and outer wall for insulation purposes. I haven't fired any of these, but my intuition would be that one layer has to be punctured to let the air pressure normalize, or potentially...as you fire that trapped air volume will expand...and I don't know what will happen....but I bet it isn't good!

Let me know if that answered your question, if not, I can expand in a blog post at some point.

I am a thrift store shopper and have picked up a few pieces of (what I hope are) stainless steel bowls amd candy dishes. What precautions should I take when I put them into the kiln? I don't want to ruin a kiln shelf or even worse, kiln, by trying to save a little money. I also have wondered about the items I see in the ceramics shop, and how to use them to fuse. Thanks for your tips.

Thank you for your tip on the ceramic/glazed items in a thrift store. I got 3 ceramic masks and slumped a black ridge iridescent glass over it. You can see it at facebook.comTheGlassWizard. Click Photo -- Albums --- Faces.
Hope you enjoy.
