December Kiln Carving Pattern

Free December Pattern

December’s free kiln carving pattern is a lovely winter scene with the North Star shining over the mountain.  I arranged the winter background especially to get you into the mood for this one!

1.  Download the pattern

This pattern is no longer available as an individual download.  To download the free 2012 Kiln Carving pattern compilation book, please visit the Shop.

2. Cut fiber paper

Cut a large enough piece of fiber paper to accommodate your whole pattern.  Tack the pattern down through the little black dots.  A large piece of cardboard works wonderfully for this, and will also protect your work surface from impending razor cuts.

Using a very sharp razor (I use a new blade for each new pattern), carefully cut out all of the gray areas of the pattern.

After all of the gray areas have been removed, carefully cut around the black outside border.

Cutting the border6.  Cut glass to fit

Cut a piece of glass to fit the pattern.  This pattern will work with a large bottle cylinder, as well as with recycled window glass, then full fuse.

7.  Finish the kiln carving

After fusing, clean up any sharp edges with a diamond pad or file.  The finished glass can be drilled and used as a hanging art piece, or slumped into a holiday dish.
