Sandy P. brings this question:
Hi Jodi,
I am in Tampa, Florida and heard about you from a friend who saw you on HGTV in Charlevoix, Michigan. I am new to fusing and love the idea of using “recucled” glass. I have a question for you. Do you mix the glass? It’s always been instilled to me about using compatible glass? I’ve slumped a beer bottle for fun but haven’t done any other experimenting. I’d really appreciate it if you would let me know. Thanks. I’ll be watching for you ~
Sandy
Hi Sandy;
What you have learned is correct, EXCEPT when you reduce the size of the surface area to nearly non-existent proportions, i.e. crushed glass. Bedrock tile co. in Seattle has been doing it for about a long time, with no flux or additions.
I have one piece shown here on my blog that is mixed blue bottle glass and clear window. The piece is opaque and made with crushed glass scroll down to August 28 entry to have a look.
Let me know if you have additional questions,
Jodi

I bought a G2 Bottle Cutter and tried to make rings with the blue Bud Light Platinum bottles. I followed the directions with the cutter about scoring and using hot and cold water to break them apart. I scored about 10 bottles about 12 times for rings. I have only 2 complete rings and a bunch of shattered glass. It did not work at all for me. The glass is a really pretty blue color and I really want to use it somehow. Can I put all the glass together to make a tray or coasters? The bottles are all the same type of beer bottles and probably came out of the same case. Thanks!
@kellbwm Beer bottles are hard, the glass is SO thin. I finally got so frustrated with my bottle cutter I bought a saw. I think it’s definitely worth a try to melt them together. Like you said, they probably all came out of the same case, if you still have the bottoms of the bottles, you can compare the line numbers, if they are the same then the bottles for sure came from the same batch. I’d try it anyway, even if the numbers are different. You may have to hold a bit longer (+2 min) at the top temperature to get them to flow together evenly.
@GlassWithaPast Jim and I decided a wet saw would be the best thing to do, too. I didn’t know about the line numbers on the bottom of bottles. I will check them out. Thank you, K
@kellbwm I think you’ll be happy with a saw. Blade quality is critical, so make sure you get a nice one! I have an MK Diamond blade and it is a pure joy to saw with.
