Firing Schedule for Inclusions/Bubble Squeeze

Firing with Inclusions requires you to adjust your firing schedule.  By slowing down the ramp rates and adding a hold in the slumping range, you can accomplish a ‘bubble squeeze’ and encourage the air to escape as the glass fuses.  Here is an adjusted fusing schedule for example:

Ramp Rate (F) Hold Temp (F) Hold Time
300/hr 500 15 min
250 1300 10 min – 40 min Bubble Squeeze Hold
200 1550 8 min
9999/hr 1060 45 min
50/hr 940 0
100/hr 740 0
off to room temp

This is a sample firing schedule for float glass, it WILL NEED TO BE TESTED AND ADJUSTED!  There are many variables that will effect your firing success, including glass thickness, inclusion thickness, kiln size, etc.  I’m always happy to help with adjustments, give this schedule a try, then send me photos via the contact form and I can offer suggestions.

Some examples of projects using this firing schedule:

Tips and Trouble Shooting:

  • If the gap is too small to slide pieces together, you’ll need to widen it with either a diamond file or a diamond bit on a dremel tool.  Use plenty of water and wear a mask.
  • Make sure the feet are level, if your vase isn’t balancing, you may need to grind the feet larger and flatter
  • If your fiber paper doesn’t come out cleanly, add water and dig it out with a skewer or hooked wire.
  • Yes, the vase can hold water

Fused Window Glass Heart Puzzle Vase

Puzzle vases are multiple part projects that slot together after fusing to create a 3 dimensional design.  I love them because not only are they a fusing challenge, they are an engineering challenge.  The finished art is a little mesmerizing, how does it work??  It's...

Bottle Glass Fish Sun Charm

What’s a Sun Charm?  A little something that’s more than a sun catcher, but not quite a wind chime.  I was in the mood to do some fusing and also use up a bunch of my jewelry making stash, so here we go!  Materials: Fused Bottle Glass Fish Jump Rings Split Rings...
